Every couple of months I get on a hand stitching high. Well, I am on a hand stitching high right now. When I moved a couple of months ago, I was stuck in a hotel room for two weeks and I fell back in love with hand work. There has been a Sew Along that I have been eyeing for almost a year but hadn\’t had the time to actually sit down and do it.
The Hand Pieced Quilt Along is not just hand quilting, it\’s hand piecing as well!! Dear Jesus. I don\’t know why that scares me, women did it for hundreds of years, but hand piecing is a big mountain that I\’m not sure I trust myself on. But I\’m going to do it anyway.
I trotted down to Sewtropolis here in Minneapolis and picked out a few fat quarters and some background fabric. I also stopped by Michaels and grabbed a ruler and new scissors because if I\’m going to do this, I\’m going to go all the way, cutting pieces by hand. I\’m crazy. I know. But I\’m the kind of person that goes all the way.
I\’m excited to cut my pieces out and try my hand at this vintage skill. I think this will be an awesome project to do on the plane or the bus, so I will keep you updated on my progress.
Update: I have completed two blocks and am working on my third!
Block 1: Churn Dash
Block 2: Jacob\’s Ladder
Block 3: Ohio Star (cut out)
I wish you all the luck and sanity in the world with this project!

Great job! I tell myself that eventually I would love to make an entirely handpieced/quilted quilt….we'll see how many decades before I get there…my eye sight might be shot by then :-)Those are some beautiful blocks! Love the white on white paisley! Here via WIP Wednesday.

I pieced my entire first quilt by hand, well, the blocks of it, and then I thought I should probably piece the top by hand too (even though I'd gotten a sewing machine in the meantime) and then it sat for almost ten years, so last year I decided it was probably time to just suck it up and machine piece it 😀 (Still not quilted though.) Anyway, your blocks look good!

Your blocks are beautiful – I'm quite tempted to do this myself as I am in a hand sewing love phase myself at the moment, tackling Camelot blocks which is quite challenging. Keep going – you are doing a great job!

As someone who started as a hand piecer, welcome to the club! And one hint, you really want to press every seam/unit as its done. It will make the block come together much easier.

Colby: good luck with your project. I always have a hand project going. I enjoy hand work and like to have something to work on when visiting with friends or watching TV. It is soothing to me and it is surprising how quickly the blocks actually go together.

I wish I was as far as you are. I decided to try hand piecing this year, but I've only sewn a couple of row. These look great!
